Orin's take
7out of 10 — how sure Orin is of this read

Orin's own judgment of how firmly the evidence points one way — not the chance the price goes up.

Refreshed 10 Oct, the 6th take on CR — written before the latest event Orin flagged. An update has been queued since 27 Oct and hasn't run yet.

Crane Company is executing well — Q2 2026 revenue surged 25.6% YoY to $724.7M, FY2025 operating margin expanded to 18.4% from 16.7%, and the company has beaten EPS estimates in eight consecutive quarters — but the stock trades at a 35.4x P/E and 22.6x EV/EBITDA, a 7% and 16.5% premium to peer medians respectively, leaving limited room for error.

Total debt quadrupled from $319M at FY2024 to $1.22B at FY2025, and the September 2026 agreement to acquire Trillium Pumps US for approximately $240M at 14.6x extends the leverage build-up. Strong fundamentals support the business, but net insider selling of $9.9M over 24 months and a richly valued equity with rising leverage argue for patience until deleveraging evidence emerges.

What could go wrong

  • Leverage escalation. Total debt rose from $319M (FY2024) to $1.22B (FY2025), and the $240M Trillium Pumps acquisition announced September 2026 adds further balance sheet strain before deleveraging is evident.
  • Valuation premium. At $204.75, CR trades at 35.4x P/E vs a 33.0x peer median and 4.56x P/S vs 3.43x peer median, pricing in sustained double-digit growth that leaves no margin for a slowdown.
  • Persistent insider selling. Insiders net sold $9.9M of shares over 24 months, with recent dispositions by Tullis at $205-225 in August 2026, signaling limited insider conviction at current levels.
  • Integration execution. The Trillium Pumps acquisition at 14.6x multiple requires smooth integration to justify the price; integration missteps could pressure margins and debt servicing capacity.

What would change my mind

Q3 2026 earnings beat with deleveraging commentary. October 27 earnings show continued 20%+ YoY revenue growth and management outlines a concrete debt reduction planbullish
Margin compression. Quarterly operating margin falls below 18% or revenue growth decelerates below 15% YoYbearish

How is it priced, against its own past and its sector?

    Tue 27 Oct close

Priced at 32.9× its last 12 months of profit (Tue 27 Oct close); the typical Industrials company on the NYSE is at 33.7×. It has too few years of its own for a usual level.

    • So it has no full fiscal year of its own on file yet — no usual level.

P/E: the share price divided by one year of profit per share — roughly how many years of today's profit the price pays for. A company that loses money has no P/E.

P/S: the company's total market value divided by one year of revenue. Used when there is no profit to measure.

EV/EBITDA: the price of the whole company (its shares plus its debt, minus its cash) divided by one year of operating profit before interest, tax and write-downs.

P/B: the share price divided by the book value per share — what the company owns minus what it owes, as its accounts record it. When book value is tiny, P/B swings wildly and says little.

    Tue 27 Oct

What does a cash-flow model say a share is worth?

    computed 27 Oct at $192.04

A standard cash-flow model puts it at $97 a share — 50% below the $192.04 price it was computed against (27 Oct).

ModelValue a shareAgainst the price then
    Standard$9750% below $192.04
    Levered$5372% below $192.04

Discounted cash flow: a model's estimate of what the company is worth today, from the cash it is forecast to make in future years. Small changes in the forecast move it a lot, and it says little about a company that loses money.

Standard / levered: two versions of the cash-flow model: the standard one counts the cash before the company pays its lenders, the levered one after.
