LEADERSHIP EXIT
COCOPWORTH A LOOK
ConocoPhillips CEO steps back, we stay positive
ConocoPhillips said its chief executive, Lance, will retire from the top job and become Executive Chair, keeping a hand on the wheel. The stock actually rose about 2% on the news, and we lean positive on the shares. Still, when leaders have exited like this, we found 115 past cases where the stock lagged the market by about 3% over the next three months, and it beat the market less than half the time — so caution is fair.
What would change this — A fresh 8-K or quarterly filing naming an outside successor rather than an orderly internal handoff, or a shift toward insider selling, would make us rethink.
