LEADERSHIP EXIT
COCOPWORTH A LOOK
ConocoPhillips CEO steps back, we stay constructive
ConocoPhillips just disclosed that its chief executive, Ryan Lance, will retire from the CEO role and shift to Executive Chair. Leadership changes like this have often been rocky in the past — we found 115 similar cases, and on average the stock lagged the market by about 3% over the next three months, with barely half of them beating the market. Even so, this looks like an orderly handoff with the outgoing leader staying on the board, and we lean positive overall.
What would change this — A fresh 8-K naming an outside successor rather than an internal one, or a wave of insider selling by top executives, would push us to rethink this positive stance.
